(PSA) Prostate Profile/Screening Profile

Prostate Profile/Screening Profile (PSA)

This profile checks the levels of Prostate Specific Antigen. A high Prostate Specific Antigen can indicate problems with the prostate gland. This profile can also be used to help diagnose prostate can; a high level of Prostate Specific Antigen may indicate prostate cancer. The prostate produces a fluid that mixes with sperm to make semen. Issues with the prostate are common particularly as men get older and can lead to serious conditions such as prostate cancer if undiagnosed. A high level of Prostate Specific Antigen can be a sign of cancer. But your Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) level can also be raised in prostate conditions that are not cancer. For example:

  • Urinary tract infection
  • Prostatitis
  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Please note that a PSA test cannot be relied on to either diagnose prostate cancer or exclude the presence of prostate cancer. If your PSA levels are high then you will need further investigations with a Urologist. If you have symptoms of prostate cancer and your PSA levels are low you will still need to see a doctor to consider further investigations.
