Private Breast ultrasound in Luton

Breast health is an essential part of overall wellness, and medical imaging plays a crucial role in early detection and diagnosis of breast conditions. One of the most commonly used tools in breast imaging is the breast ultrasound scan. This safe, painless, and non-invasive test provides valuable insights into breast tissue.

Private Breast ultrasound scan, doctor referral not required.

Price: £225

What is a breast ultrasound scan?

A breast ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the structures within the breast. Unlike X-rays or mammograms, ultrasound does not involve radiation, making it one of the safest forms of imaging.

The scan is typically performed using a handheld device called a transducer, which is moved over the skin after a conductive gel is applied. The sound waves emitted by the transducer bounce off tissues and create real-time images on a screen, allowing clinicians to examine areas of concern.

When is a breast ultrasound scan recommended?

A breast ultrasound is often used as a complementary tool to mammography, especially in cases where further evaluation is needed. Your doctor may recommend a breast ultrasound if:

  • You have a palpable lump or thickening in the breast tissue
  • You have dense breast tissue, which can make mammograms less effective, for example in younger individuals
  • You have a lump that hasn’t shown up on the mammogram
  • You are under 40 years old and experiencing symptoms (ultrasound is often the preferred first-line imaging in this age group).

What can a breast ultrasound scan show?

Breast ultrasounds are particularly good at distinguishing between solid masses (like tumours) and fluid-filled cysts. While ultrasound alone cannot definitively diagnose breast cancer, it helps clinicians determine whether a biopsy or further testing is necessary.

It is also useful for evaluating:

  • Benign lumps like fibroadenomas
  • Whether a breast lump is solid or if contains fluid (a cyst)
  • Abscesses or infections
  • Changes in lymph nodes
  • Post-surgical changes or implant integrity

The procedure

Private breast ultrasound scan take place in the Fusion Healthcare clinic.

Clothing from the upper half of the body has to be removed prior to stating the scan. One of our specialist sonographers will put a lubricating gel over your breast, this can sometimes feel cold. The gel helps the probe to slide over your skin to give clear pictures on the screen. You might feel a little pressure when the sonographer moves the probe over your breast. Do tell them if it is uncomfortable. The sonographer will also look at the lymph nodes in your armpit (axilla).

It can take about 10 to 15 minutes. The sonographer might ask you to move position a few times, bringing your arm up and down. You can usually have a family member or a friend with you while you have the scan. Just let the sonographer know that someone will be with you.

After the scan, your sonographer will discuss the scan with you and you have the opportunity to ask any questions
