Private smear test is carried out by our experienced specialised nurses who will collect cells from the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. The collected cells are then examined under a microscope for certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that can cause changes to the cells of your cervix. These are called ‘high risk’ types of HPV. If these types of HPV are not found then you will not require any further testing.
For the test, a smooth tube-shaped tool, called a speculum, will be inserted into the vagina and then used to open the walls of the vagina so that the cervix may be seen. A soft brush is inserted through the speculum to the cervix and rotated to obtain the sample.
Many women find the process uncomfortable, however, try not to be put off the test as it is one of the best ways to protect yourself against cervical cancer. You may stop the test at any time, or ask to lay in a different position.
