What is meningitis?

Meningococcal disease is a rare but potentially life-threatening illness that can lead to meningitis (inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) or septicaemia (blood poisoning). Meningitis, sepsis, and septicaemia (blood poisoning) are very serious illness and can lead to life-changing disabilities, such as amputations, hearing loss, and brain damage. Anybody can get meningitis, but it is most common in babies, children, teenagers, and young adults.

The MenACWY vaccine plays a crucial role in protecting individuals, particularly young people, from four types of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W, and Y, and is given to teenagers as part of the routine vaccination programme in the UK, usually in schools.

Who should have the vaccine?

The MenACWY vaccine is offered to specific groups of people in the UK:

Teenagers and Young Adults: The vaccine is routinely offered to teenagers in school Year 9 or 10 (ages 13-14) as part of the NHS vaccination schedule. Young people aged 14-25 who are starting university (freshers) are also encouraged to get the vaccine if they have not already received it. This is because living in close quarters, such as in university halls, increases the risk of meningococcal disease spreading.

At-Risk Individuals: People with certain medical conditions that weaken the immune system may also be eligible for the vaccine. Individuals that work in high-risk areas and professions, are travelling to areas with high risk, or have been in close proximity to someone who is infected are also eligible for the vaccine or an additional dose.

Who shouldn’t have the MenACWY Vaccine?

While most individuals can have the MenACWY vaccine, the vaccine should not be given to those who have had:

  • A serious allergic reaction to a previous dose of the vaccine
  • A serious allergic reaction to any ingredient in the MenACWY vaccine.

When to have the MenACWY vaccine?

Teenagers, usually aged 13 or 14, are given the MenACWY vaccine at school. If you have missed the vaccine, or have a child who has missed the vaccine, the MenACWY can be given up until the age of 25.

Vaccination doesn’t just protect the individual—it also helps to create herd immunity, reducing the spread of meningococcal bacteria in the community. By ensuring that you and your loved ones are vaccinated, you’re contributing to the wider effort to prevent these devastating diseases.

The MenACWY vaccine is a vital tool in the fight against meningococcal disease in the UK. Whether you’re a teenager, a university fresher, or a parent, it’s essential to understand the importance of this vaccine and ensure it’s administered at the right time. If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to speak to us at Fusion Healthcare. Protect yourself and those around you by staying informed and up-to-date with your vaccinations.
