Ultrasound guided injection for chronic pain management
Ultrasound guided injection for chronic pain management
At Fusion Healthcare, we offer effective chronic pain management in the form of ultrasound-guided steroid injections, capable of treating chronic and acute joint pain in many areas of the body. This form of treatment can provide immediate and long-term relief to your joints. Ultrasound guided injections are often recommended for their ability to target localised pain accurately via ultrasound. Additionally, the combination of local anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory medication provides immediate relief from the pain.
Whether you have pain in one joint from an injury (or just wear and tear), or you’ve developed osteoarthritis in multiple joints, injections could help. Injections may be appropriate for joints throughout your body, including your knee, hip, shoulder, ankle, and sacroiliac (SI) joints.

Chronic Pain Management
How does it work?
The procedure is carried out by one of our highly experienced musculoskeletal sonographers who will carry out initial ultrasound screening of the target area to determine the extent of the issue and determine the exact area for needle insertion. Using the ultrasound probe, the clinician will guide the needle and its contents into the target site.
A mix of local anaesthetic and a small dose of steroid is injected into the target site. The local anaesthetic provides immediate relief to the site. The steroid, also known as corticosteroid, is an anti-inflammatory medication used to reduce inflammation at the target site and provide longer term relief. This combination should effectively target the site and issue. The period of time that the steroids effects lasts varies depending on your condition.
The clinician will test the immediate results of the injection and advise on next steps.
What can steroid injections target?
There are many reasons why a steroid injection may be the right decision for you; these injections can be used to treat a number of conditions:
- Joint point
- Arthritis
- Bursitis
- Tendonitis
The initial diagnostic ultrasound scans performed prior to the injection may be able to determine the issue and allow for more accurate treatment.
We advise loose clothing be worn around the target area, and that patients wait in our clinic for 10-15 minutes following the injection so we can monitor for any adverse reactions. We also advise that patients receiving an ultrasound guided steroid injection arrange transport home and do not attempt to drive themselves.
Side effects
There are possible side effects which may be encountered when receiving an ultrasound guided steroid injection. These include:
- Pain and discomfort in the area for a few days
- Bruising in target site
- Flushing of the face
Rare side effects include:
- Infection of the target site: Redness, swelling, and pain
- Changes to vision
In the event of these rare side effects following your appointment, please seek medical advice immediately
